Translated headword: to act as a ferryman; to operate a ferry
Vetting Status: high

Greek Original:
Porthmeuein. heuriskei Nesson porthmeuonta misthou kai peithei auton, hôs porthmeuseien Alkmênên kai Dêïaneiran.
Notes:
For terms cognate with this unglossed headword, the present infinitive of porqmeu/w, see pi 2070, pi 2071, pi 2072, pi 2073, pi 2074, pi 2075.
[1] The quotation (which contains the present participle, masculine accusative singular, of the headword verb) was attributed by de Boor, as Adler notes, to either Nicolaus of Damascus or John of Antioch; Favuzzi, cited under delta 404, now favours Nicolaus. (The phrase *ne/sson porqmeu/onta also occurs in Pausanias 10.38.2, but the rest of that passage is quite different.) In any event it is describing the myth -- best known as the background to Sophocles' tragedy Women of Trachis -- involving Heracles, his wife Deianeira, and the lustful centaur Nessus; cf. delta 381, theta 412, nu 256. (Alcmene [alpha 1294], Heracles' mother, seems misplaced in this context.)
