Headword: Petteuousi
Adler number: pi,1392
Translated headword: they play (board games)
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] they play tabla.[1] Also [sc. attested is] 'in games of petteia', [meaning] in games, in pipes.[2]
And 'game-piece' [is used] likewise.[3]
Greek Original:
Petteuousi: tablizousi. Kai Petteiais, paidiais, aulois. kai Pettos homoiôs.
Notes:
[1] This equivalance -- also in Photius (pi826 Theodoridis) and other lexica -- contradicts the widely accepted equation of the game of petteia with ancient war games (pi 1391, pi 1384), for tabla (tau 7) is a race-game similar to modern tavli or backgammon, and distinct from war games. This entry is used by those who question the identification of petteia with a war game and believe that petteia was a general term for any board game played with pessoi. See the fuller discussion, with bibliography, at pi 1384.
[2] The use of 'pipes' here is comprehensible only if the same word was sometimes used for the fluted 'towers' (delta 748, pi 1384, tau 7) used to prevent cheating when throwing the dice. (DW: the equivalent entry in other lexica -- Hesychius pi2071, Photius pi41 Theodoridis -- does not have 'pipes'.)
[3] Addendum lacking, Adler reports, in mss AFV.
