Headword: Kôlon
Adler number: kappa,2243
Translated headword: limb
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[sc. So called] because that is where lies the whole bone (kei=sqai o(/lon).[1] Hence also skw/lhc ["worm"] by antiphrasis.[2]
Greek Original:
Kôlon: para to ekei keisthai holon to ostoun. enthen kai skôlêx kata antiphrasin.
Notes:
See also kappa 2244 (and the plural at kappa 2231 and kappa 2232).
[1] The Etymologicum Gudianum and the Etymologicum Magnum use this derivation for koili/a "belly" instead.
[2] That is, "worm" is derived from "limb" as its antonym (antiphrasis was normally used to explain euphemism). As ps.-Zonaras, the Etymologicum Gudianum and the Etymologicum Magnum s.v. skw/lhc explain, that is because "worms have no limbs, that is, bones". This kind of explanation is also known as the type lucus a non lucendo; cf. epsilon 1031 (end).
