Adler number: kappa,2172
Translated headword: Kotys, Cotys
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Kotys] was a man noteworthy in appearance and outstanding in military matters, besides being entirely unlike a Thracian in spirit;[1] for he had turned out discreet and displayed the mildness and gravitas of a gentleman.
Greek Original:
Kotus anêr ên kata tên epiphaneian axiologos kai pros tas polemikas chreias diapherôn, eti de kata tên psuchên panta mallon ê Thraix: kai gar nêptês hupêrche kai praotêta kai bathos hupephainen eleutheron.
Notes:
Polybius 27.12; cf. Diodorus Siculus 30.3, which is based on it. This Kotys is evidently a descendant (C2 BCE) of kappa 2173: see Walbank 310.
[1] 'The Thracians had a reputation among the Greeks for cruelty, treachery, brutality, and drunkenness' (Walbank 311).
