This man, so they say, was born of slaves. He wrote the work called Babyloniaca ["Babylonian Histories"].[1] It is [about] the passion of Rhodanes and Sinonis, in 39 books.[2]
This man tells of Zobaras the eunuch, the lover of the most beautiful Mesopotamia.
Greek Original:
Iamblichos: houtos, hôs phasin, apo doulôn ên. egrapse de ta kaloumena Babulôniaka: esti de Rhodanou kai Sinônidos erôs en bibliois lth#. houtos legei peri Zôbara tou eunouchou, tou erastou tês Mesopotamias tês eueidestatês.
Notes:
fl. c.165-180; OCD(4) s.v. Iamblichus(1). [For 2, see iota 27.]
[1] This novel survives only in the epitome of Photius (Bibliotheca cod. 94) and a number of fragments scattered throughout the Suda.
[2] The surprisingly large number of books (39) seems to be a mistake. Photius' epitome, which presumably was based on a complete text of the novel, indicates a more plausible number, 16 (Bibl. cod. 94 p. 78b.44).
