Headword: Ethusas, antithusêi
Adler number: epsilon,336
Translated headword: you sacrificed [so] you should sacrifice in turn
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
The Cyclops says this to Odysseus in Philoxenus.[1] For they misinterpret the [Homeric line] "and then we kindled a fire and sacrificed;"[2] in the Poet [this] is said about sheep, and does not mean we sacrificed.
Greek Original:
Ethusas, antithusêi: touto para Philoxenôi ho Kuklôps legei pros ton Odussea. apekdechontai gar to, entha de pur keiantes ethu- samen, para tôi poiêtêi eirêsthai epi tôn arnôn, ouchi de to apethusamen noeisthai.
Notes:
This entry -- following Photius, Lexicon epsilon170 -- makes no sense as it stands: the final verb, creating the distinction intended between animal and other sacrifices, must be corrupt. Suggested emendations include e)pequ/samen ('we burned incense').
