Anelein
Adler number: alpha,2248
Translated headword: to overturn; to take up
Vetting Status: high
Translation: [Meaning] to overthrow. "They insisted, through ambassadors, first that the anti-Megarian decree be overturned and the Greeks be left independent".[1]
*)anelei=n is also the term for taking up exposed babies and raising them;[2] and in short, whatever someone might take up.
"For, having overturned the law, it elected her";
Demosthenes says this in the [speech] Against
Androtion;[3] but the quotation is transmitted in two forms, the one as written above, the other with
au)th/n in the accusative instead of [dative]
au(th|=.[4] And the one proffering the accusative has the following sort of rationale: having overturned this law, or indeed broken it, [the council] passed a vote about itself, [to the effect] that it should be crowned. But the [version] with dative [sc. must be understood differently]: having overturned this law, [the council] elected him for itself.[5]

Diodorus Siculus 12.39.4 (paraphrased rather than quoted) on one of the grievances that led to the Peloponnesian War (431-404); cf.

Demosthenes 22.20 (web address 1).. To understand the textual issue which now arises (cf. again
alpha 4476), note that the feminine entity involved is the Athenian council (
boule). See further in the notes below.
[4] Vice versa, in fact.
[5] The textual discrepancy here is at least as old as Harpokration s.v. Modern editors have favoured a third option, that of emending to the
nominative (and placing a comma between
tou=ton and
to\n no/mon: "having overturned the law, [the Council] elected this man itself".
