This poet is not otherwise attested. G. Markwald (
Die homerischen Epigramme, 1986, 114f.) suggests that this is the real name of the early epic poet otherwise known as Thestorides (son of Thestor) of Phocaea (later of
Chios), who is associated with the epic or epics known as the
Little Iliad (
Epicorum Graecorum Fragmenta , ed. M. Davies (1988) 129ff.). Thestor ('whip-man') is used as a name in
Homer, e.g. as the father of Calchas, but no poetry on such a man or character is known.
It might also be argued that "Virgin-born" (cf.
pi 666) and "Chaos" are appropriate names for a poet who writes, perhaps negatively (if that is the sense of the preposition
ei)s here), of his own father.
