Adler number: pi,281
Translated headword: might compare
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Meaning [he/she/it] might [?]escort. Aeschines [in the speech] Against Ktesiphon [sc. uses the word].
Greek Original:
*paraba/loito: a)nti\ tou= parape/myaito. *ai)sxi/nhs kata\ *kthsifw=ntos.
Notes:
A puzzle, as no passage in Aeschines 3 contains this verb (aorist middle optative, third person singular, of paraba/llw; cf. pi 270, pi 272, pi 272, pi 273, pi 274, pi 275, pi 276, pi 277, pi 278, pi 279, pi 280). J.J. Keaney, the most recent editor of Harpokration (whose entry s.v. is the source for this present one; also in Photius, Lexicon pi194 Theodoridis), nominates 3.189, as does (tentatively) Theodoridis, but that offers only the present participle paraba/llwn.
An instance of paraba/loito does occur in Thucydides 1.133, but with the sense of 'betray/deceive', which does not fit the lexicographers' gloss.
