Adler number: kappa,2794
Translated headword: stooped
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
"Since readily would the curvaceous waist have gone even to Hades stooped."[1]
[kufale/os means one who is] hunched.[2]
Greek Original:
*kufale/a: e)pei\ ta/x' a)\n h( polukamph\s i)cu\s kei)s a)i/+dan w)/|xeto kufale/a. kekurtwme/nos.
Notes:
The headword is the feminine nominative singular of an adjective kufale/os (kappa 2795). It is presumably drawn from the quotation given; in any event neither it nor any other form of this adjective is attested outside that epigram and the Suda.
[1] Greek Anthology 6.297.7-8 (Phanias), the farmer Alcimus's dedication of agricultural implements to Athena; cf. Gow and Page, vol. I (162-163) and vol. II (470-471); cf. further excerpts from this epigram at alpha 351, alpha 3945, and phi 116.
[2] Again kappa 2795. In the present entry one might have expected the feminine kekurtwme/nh, and Adler notes an emendation to that effect in the 1549 Basel edition (later rejected by Bernhardy).
