Headword: Tragikôteros
Adler number: tau,894
Translated headword: more tragic, rather tragic
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] more/rather trustworthy; or more/rather unfortunate.[1] Aristophanes [writes]: "so you should have yoked a wing of Pegasus, so that you would appear more tragic to the gods." He is alluding to what is said about Icarus. Or because it seems that Bellerophon, after killing the Chimaera, went back to Corinth and deceived the wife of Proetus, and setting her as his wife on Pegasus the horse, threw her into the middle of the sea.[2]
[Note] that the seven tragedians were called a Pleiad.[3]

Notes:
[1] The headword, extracted from the quotation given, is comparative (masculine nominative singular) of the adjective tragiko/s; cf. tau 890, tau 891, tau 892, tau 893.
[2] Trygaeus' daughter to her father in Aristophanes, Peace 135-6, with scholia on 136 and 141; cf. sigma 515, tau 8. (Some editors understand the sentence as a rhetorical question.) The connection between the two glosses on the headword itself is elucidated in Platnauer's note ad loc.: "by tragikw/teros is meant 'more like a hero of tragedy'; i.e. one more likely to engage the attention and sympathy of the gods." For Icarus, cf. iota 257; for Bellerophon etc., cf. beta 231, iota 400, sigma 515, chi 312.
