Athenian men, who voluntarily went into Persia to make amends to Xerxes, king of the Persians, for the heralds which had been sent by him and murdered in Athens.
Greek Original:
Sperchis kai Boulis, andres Athênaioi, authairetoi es Persas êlthon, dikên dôsontes Xerxêi tôi Persôn basilei huper tôn kêrukôn tôn hup' autou pemphthentôn kai katachôsthentôn para tôn Athênaiôn.
See Herodotus 7.133-7 (web address 1) and, in the Suda, under xi 54 (where there is a note on the proper form of the name "Sperchis"). Both here and at beta 442 they are called Athenians; they were in fact Spartans - a mistake which could not have been made by anyone who had read Herodotus for themselves.
