Headword: Pachunooi
Adler number: pi,833
Translated headword: thick-minded
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning they who are] thick-headed, mindless.[1] "We recognized so much thickness and benightedness that we dared to put them to the test, as no one was as ignorant as they."[2]
Greek Original:
Pachunooi: pachunoes, anoêtoi. tosautên de hêmeis pachutêta kai amathian kategnôkamen, hôste etolmêsamen exelenchein autous tosouton êgnoêkotas, hoson oudeis êgnoêsen.
Notes:
[1] = Synagoge, Photius pi504 Theodoridis; cf. Hesychius pi1171. The headword adjective is otherwise unattested in this form, nominative plural masculine (the quotation about to be given includes a related abstract noun) -- but NB it should apparently be paxu/noi, not the transmitted paxu/nooi; thus Theodoridis, following Cobet. If so, it is perhaps [DW] quoted from Cyril of Alexandria (PG 68.141.55)
[2] Damascius, Life of Isidore fr. 356 Zintzen (223 Asmus). Overlapping snippets of the same passage, with occasional variant readings, are at alpha 278, delta 627, epsilon 1929, pi 179.
