Headword: Pontos
Adler number: pi,2049
Translated headword: Pontus, Pontos, Black Sea, sea
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Properly the [sc. sea] of this name between the Chersonnese and the Euxine, but by misuse of language the entire sea.[1]
[There is] also a proverb, 'a Pontus of benefits', in reference to benefits numerous and large; as if a sea of benefits.[2] Aristophanes [writes]: '[o] Pontoposeidon'; meaning o greatest Poseidon. Metaphorically from the sea.[3]
Greek Original:
Pontos: kuriôs men ho endon tês Cherronêsou kai Euxeinou kaloumenos, katachrêstikôs de pasa hê thalassa. kai paroimia. Pontos agathôn, epi tôn pollôn agathôn kai megalôn: hôsper agathôn thalassa. Aristophanês: Pontoposeidon. anti tou megiste Poseidon. apo tou pontou metaphorikôs.
Notes:
cf. pi 2048.
[1] Likewise in Photius and other lexica. But both parts of the entry are unsatisfactory. Its first part--if, as seems probable, 'the Chersonnese' is the Thracian rather than the Tauric Chersonnese (see OCD4 Chersonnesus 1 and 2)--appears to be describing the Propontis, a meaning unattested elsewhere. And its second part--where 'the entire sea' might, but probably does not, mean 'the entire *Black* Sea'; cf. epsilon 3606; and generally OCD4 under Euxine Sea--is incorrect as stated: the general sense is primary.
[2] cf. generically alpha 123, delta 91.
