Headword: Hiereias enupnion
Adler number: iota,165
Translated headword: priestess's dream
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
But others say it should rather be called Himeraia's dream. A certain old woman [named] Himeraia, so they say, thought she saw herself taken up into the heavens, and indeed as she entered the palace of Zeus she beheld a red-haired man bound with an iron chain, below the royal throne. When she asked who he was, she [seemed] to hear, "the scourge of Sicily." So much for the dream. But some time later, seeing Dionysius ruling as tyrant,[1] she told the dream to many and reported that he was the one she had seen. Dionysios was angered and put her to death.

Notes:
Also in other lexica (see the references at Photius iota49 Theodoridis), and cf. the headword phrase as a proverb: Appendix proverbiorum 3.25. Ultimately a fragment of tau 602, the Sicilian historian Timaeus of Tauromenium (FGrH 566 F29) preserved in the scholia to Aeschines 2.10 (which alludes to this episode of 'the priestess's dream' as one mentioned in the spoken version of Demosthenes 19).
The old woman Himeraia is cross-referenced at iota 346.
