The proverb is applied to gloomy and unlaughing people. For those descending into Trophonios[1] are said to spend the entire time unlaughing. The story goes that Trophonios had the head of his brother Agamedes and was being pursued by Augeas; after saying a prayer he fell into a chasm, right where the oracle [now] is.

Eis Trophôniou memanteutai: epi tôn skuthrôpôn kai agelastôn hê paroimia tattetai. hoi gar katabainontes eis Trophônion legontai ton hexês chronon agelastoi einai. ton de Trophônion phasin echonta tên kephalên tou adelphou autou Agamêdous kai diôkomenon hupo Augaiou, euxamenon eis chasma empesein, hou dê kai to manteion estin.
