[Meaning] turns out well. "Nothing, mark you, succeeds without effort."
Greek Original:
Eutuchei: epitunchanetai. ponou toi chôris ouden eutuchei.
Notes:
The gloss, the passive of e)pitugxa/nw ('hit the mark, meet, reach one's goal', LSJ III 4, web address 1), comes from a scholion on Sophocles, Electra 945, here quoted (web address 2). The quotation, preceded by "Look!" (o(/ra,), has the particle toi in its usage 'mark you', "with a proverb or general reflection [...] to point the applicability of a universal truth to the special matter in hand" (J.D. Denniston, The Greek Particles, 2nd. corr. edn., Oxford, 1966, 542-543).
The concept of eu)tuxi/a, as happiness or fortune gained partly by chance, is sharply distinguished in Aristotelian ethics from eu)daimoni/a, for the happiness and success gained from inner security. This distinction is not preserved in later Greek; see epsilon 3401, epsilon 3403, epsilon 3663, epsilon 3662 (but, for its notion of chance or destiny, see epsilon 3660, epsilon 3661, epsilon 3586, epsilon 3541, epsilon 3442). In general on tugxa/nw and its compounds see epsilon 3784, epsilon 3344, tau 1147, alpha 3591, tau 430 and their references.
