Headword: Aornos
Adler number: alpha,2849
Translated headword: Aornos, Bird-less
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[The name of a] rock in India. Arrian [writes]: "for there is some large sort of rock in this territory".[1]
There is also a lake called by this name.[2]
"Alexander took it, the rock that Herakles had found no way up".[3]
Greek Original:
Aornos: petra en têi Indikêi. Arrianos: mega gar ti chrêma petras en têi chôrai tautêi estin. esti de kai limnê houtô kaloumenê. tautên Alexandros heilen, hê tôi Hêraklei aporos egeneto hê petra.
Notes:
[1] Arrian, Anabasis 4.28.1.
[2] Mention of this lake interrupts the material about the Aornos rock. An Aornos lake is also noted in other lexica, and the allusion is doubtless to the lake (formed by a volcanic crater) at Puteoli on the Bay of Naples (see e.g. Strabo 5.4.5, with comment on its birdlessness), Virgil's Avernus.
[3] Arrian, Anabasis 4.30.4, paraphrased.
