Translation: Of Hadriani. Sophist.[1] (Hadriani is a city in
Mysia, now
Bithynia.) Pupil of the rhetor
Polemo of
Smyrna.[2] Son of Eudaemon, who was a philosopher and priest in the temple of Zeus in his native city. Others write that his father was Eudaemon.[3] He attended Herodes' classes in
Athens,[4] and those of
Aristocles in Pergamum.[5] He lived under Antoninus Caesar, and survived until Commodus. As for his speeches, one would not find an end to them anywhere, and they are in different ways and in different respects successful.[6]

Polemo.
[3] This obscure sentence perhaps arises from a confused memory of
Philostratus' pun: '
Aristides, either the son of Eudaemon [
Eudaimonos] or himself fortunate [
eudaimona].' In any event, Adler (addenda) notes Masson's proposed emendation of
to\n pate/ra au)tou= to

[4] [

[5] [

Aristocles.
[6] The sense of the last sentence is obscure; the text may be corrupt.
