Microsoft has added some features to provide more security to files with macros attached.

To save a file with a macro (or macros) recorded in it, you must save it with an extension (file type) that ends in "m". For Excel, that is "xlsm". Use the "Save As" option and choose "Macro-enabled Workbook".

To open a file that has one or more macros in it, If the xlsm file opens but you get a message that says that all macros are disabled, do you want to enable them. Click on the enable macros button if you know and trust the source of the macros.

To record a macro in Excel.

  1. Place your cursor on the cell where you want to start the macro
  2. Click on View
  3. If you want relative references in the macro, click on Macros (bottom part of button) and click on "Use Relative References." If the small icon in the menu choice has a little "frame" around it, it IS selected.
  4. Click on Macros (bottom part of button)
  5. Click on Record Macro
  6. Give the macro a name (and a shortcut if desired)
  7. click ok
  8. Perform any actions you want in the macro.
  9. Click on the Stop recording button (either at the very bottom of the screen next to "Ready" (lower left corner) or click on Macros again and choose "Stop Recording".

To run the macro

  1. Select the cell(s) you want the macro to work on
  2. click on Macros (the top part of the button) or click on Macros (the bottom part of the button and View Macros)
  3. choose the macro from the menu and click the Run button
