PhD Research Assistantships Available

Funds are expected to become available to support several new research assistantship for students who are interested in pursuing a PhD study in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Kentucky, starting Fall of 2006. The research assistants will be associated with the Laboratory for Computational Medical Imaging & Data Analysis (the CMIDA Lab), or the Laboratory for High Performance Scientific Computing & Computer Simulation (the HiPSCCS Lab) and will conduct research in computational medical imaging analysis, parallel scientific computing, biomedical informatics, data mining and information retrieval, computer simulation,.

The Laboratory for High Performance Scientific Computing and Computer Simulation is committed to the promotion of high performance scientific computing techniques and practice in general science and engineering, and industrial activities. Current research projects in HiPSCCS Lab include, but are not limited to, the following:

computational medical image analysis and visualization;
scalable high performance scientific computing algorithms and software library;
biomedical informatics, biomedical imaging processing and information extraction;
large scale high performance computer simulations;
information retrieval, knowledge discovery and data mining;
bioinformatics and nanotechnology modeling;

Applicants must be admitted as PhD candidates in the Computer Science Department. A Master's degree in computer science, image processing, medical science, numerical analysis, applied mathematics, or in other areas with sufficient background in computer science and mathematics is usually required. A formal application package to the Graduate School should include transcripts, letters of recommendation, GRE, TOEFL (international applicants only), etc.

Potential applicants are encouraged to discuss their interest and background with Professor Jun Zhang first before a formal application is sent in.

Students interested in an MS degree should NOT apply.
