Advising » Lifting Advising Hold
- Determine your advising option/advisor. There are three options available:
On-line Advising (Web Advising), Advising Sessions and Individual
Advising with your Advisor. You can find your advisor by
checking the advisor assignment list. If you have
recently changed majors or if we have omitted assigning you an advisor see Ms. Wells (763 FPAT) to be assigned an advisor. She will give you an advising sheet that you can take to your advisor. First semester freshmen are advised by Dr. Jane Riggs (377 RGAN).
- We have prepared an advising checklist (print version) for every CS undergraduate student. This checklist should list all
courses that you have taken at UK and should indicate what courses you have taken at other
institutions that apply to UK computer science requirements. They are available in two places. You advisor
has a copy and Ms. Wells' (763C Anderson Hall) can print a copy
for your use.
- For those students whose advisor is on leave the only copy is at Ms. Wells' office (763C FPAT).
Check with any advisor after you pick up your advising sheet.
-
Get your Hold Lifted. There are several ways that you can accomplish this.
- Maximum Contact - You
can check with your advisor him or
her to set up an appointment or you can check on your advisor's door and sign up on the
sheet for a time at which you can come in for advising without having to wait in too long
a line. Show up during office hours and wait to see your advisor. Take a look at
your advising check sheet and correct any information that we have incorrectly listed on
the sheets and list the courses that you plan to take on this form for your advisor to
sign. Return this sheet, with your advisor's signature, to Ms. Wells (763 Anderson
Hall) and your advisor hold will be lifted.
- Limited Contact - You can attend one of several group advising sessions at which there will be
advisors available for those who wish to come and be advised at those times and who don't
feel the need for one-on-one, individual attention. Typically, your assigned advisor
will not be the one "on duty." A schedule of group sessions
can be found by following the link below.
- Minimal Contact
using the Web - Those who want minimal contact with their advisor can
fill out a Web-advising form and submit it to
the Department. An advisor will access your transcript and e-mail one of two types
of messages. One is that all looks OK and your advisor hold has been lifted.
The other will ask you for further information before listing your hold.
- Special Assistance and Checklist option - If you need specal assistance or none
of the above options is suitable for you,
pick up your advising checklist from Ms. Wells (FPAT 763C). Ask for assistance
or complete the checklist by yourself.
On the bottom right is a place where you can list the
classes you intend to take next Summer and Fall. Fill this in with your e-mail address (top left of
the sheet), make any corrections, and leave it with Ms. Wells in the 763C Anderson Hall.
Within 24 hours we will have an advisor review it and either lift your hold or send you
e-mail with any questions he or she may have about your course selection.
Remember
- Use VIP during the hours listed in the front of the
schedule book to schedule your classes - or check the UK Registrar's Scheduling Information.
- Select the advising method that best suits your needs
and think ahead.
- Please don't wait until the last
minute!
