Jane Hayes: Computing—Where the Jobs are

On Saturday, July 12, volunteers from the University of Kentucky’s Department of Computer Science worked with 24 children—residents of Powell and surrounding counties— to undertake the Hour of Code. Held at the Healy Family McDonald’s Play Place in Stanton, the Hour of Code demystified the subject of computer science and whetted the appetites of the children to go on and learn more. The children each learned about computer programming, received a free t-shirt, received Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) literature on “How to Go to College,” and were awarded a virtual certificate of completion.
