Department and University Student Jobs
General advice to students looking for on-campus jobs
- Don't simply walk into a department or faculty office (in CS or any other department) looking for employment.
- Do not send unsolicited mail to faculty members in other departments looking for jobs.
- If you want to speak to a faculty member about employment, don't write a generic email saying "I want to meet you". Be frank: Send email that starts "I am a student looking for a job". You can attach a resume if you like. That email lets the faculty member respond "I have no positions" and you have both saved a lot of time. You generally should not bother faculty members before the semester with coursework or research questions, because they are busy preparing for the semester.
- Look for job postings on campus web sites and bulletin boards and the University online employment system (try for position type = "student", job category = "Student employment").

Dr. Jetté-Nantel in the Department of Agricultural Economics is developing a web-based learning tool to help their new graduate students get up to speed with the math and calculus requirements of graduate studies in economics. The tool is called "Webwork" and is written in Perl. So far he has done the programming himself with some assistance from Dr. Molzon of the Math department. The work is funded by a grant which would allow them to put up to $2000 in programming help over the next few months.

The Business School has a need for some assistance with a programmer for R (see this site) that might be able to assist its social networks group both in programming network algorithms as well as in helping to tutor its doctoral students in learning R themselves. In addition to knowing R, it would be helpful if the person also knows something about network algorithms, although that isn't a necessity. They are paying $12 per hour for the part-time position.
