SOL (Suda On Line) is a collaborative internet-based project involving dozens of researchers to transform the Suda into a searchable electronic text. The Suda is a 10th century Byzantine Greek historical encyclopedia of the ancient Mediterranean world, derived from the scholia to critical editions of canonical works and from compilations by yet earlier authors.
The Suda has never before been translated into English. SOL is aimed at building a complete online English translation by coordinating the work of many translators. The resulting electronic text will include SGML tags to delimit content such as personal names, places, and treatises mentioned by the Suda. It will also contain bibliographic and other references, many of which will be hypertext links to other projects elsewhere.
Issues involved in this work include copyright technicalities, identifying translators and establishment of editorial control, allocating encyclopedia entries to translators, acceptance of translations, subsequent modification of accepted translations by translators, vetting by editors, both specialist and generalist, presenting texts with Greek and English components, presenting overall translation status, and search techniques.
